헤스터 프린에 대한 첫번째 묘사

 

When the young woman-the mother of this child-stood fully revealed before the crowd, it seemed to be her first impulse to clasp the infant closely to her bosom; not so much by an impulse of motherly affection, as that she might therby conceal a certain token, which was wrought or fastened into her dress.

In a moment, however, wisely judging that one token of her shame would but poorly serve to hide another, she took the baby on her arm, and, with a burning blush, and yet a haughty smile, and a glance that would not be abashed, looked around at her townpeople and neighbours.

On the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with an elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold thread, appeared the letter A.

헤스터 프린의 외모

 

The young woman was tall, with a figure of perfect elegance, on a large scale.

She had dark and abundant hair, so glossy that it threw off the sunshine with a gleam, and a face which, besides being beautiful from regularity of feature and richness of complexion, had the impressiveness belonging to a marked brow and deep black eyes.

She was lady-like, too, after the manner of the feminine gentility of those days; characterized by a certain state and dignity, rather than by the delicate, evanescent, and indescribable grace, with is now recognized as its indication.

regularity of feature 적당한 형태? 이목구미? 와 풍부한 안색의 아름다움에다가 뚜렷한 이마와 깊은 검은 눈으로 더 인상적인 얼굴과 햇볕에 반짝이는 윤기나는 풍성한 검은 머리를 가지고 있었다.

evanescent 쉬이 사라지는, 무상한,

오늘날의 섬세하고, 쉬이 사그라지는 정확하게 그려낼 수 없는 우아함으로 인식되는 귀부인이 아니라 a certain state 와 품위로 특징되는 그 당시의 기품있는 여성 그대로의 귀부인같았다.

 

 

 

볼은 달아올랐지만 거만한 미소와 당당한 눈길로 마을 사람들을 둘러보았다는 헤스터 프린.

금실로 정교하게 자수를 놓고 장식을 한 A자..

on a large scale 이 뭘까..설마 키가 크고 우람했다는 걸까? 그러면서 완벽하게 우아한 자태를 가지고?

17세기의 기품있는 귀부인은 섬세하고 여리여리하고 우아한 모습이 아니라 어느 정도의 자태와 당당한 품위를 가진 모습이었나봐..

 

큰키에 큰 체구로 품위있는 귀부인의 자태에 검은 머리, 검은 눈에 뚜렷한 이마, 그리고 단정한 코와 입술, 좋은 안색.(그러니까.깨끗한 피부?)를 가진 아름답고 거만하고 당당한 모습의 헤스터 프린.

 

내가 상상하던 모습의 주홍글씨의 여자주인공하고는 아주 달라서 마음에 들었다. 카리스마 있고 당차다는 느낌이 드는 모습이다. 마을 사람들 앞에 등장할때 거만한 미소를 띠며 나타났다니.

하지만 이어지는 처형대에서의 프린의 모습은 버티기 힘들어 보인다.
