--it had sprung up under the footsteps of the sainted Ann Hutchinson as she entered the prison-door,-we shall not take upon us to determine. Finding it so directly on the threshold of our narrative, which is now about to issue from that inauspicious portal, we could hardly do otherwise than pluck one of its flowers and present it to the reader. It may serve, let us hope, to symbolize some sweet moral blossom, that may be found along the track, or relieve the darkening close of the tale of human frailty and sorrow.

앤 허친슨: 17세기 보스턴에서 활동하던 종교인. 구원은 사람의 선행과 상관없이 신의 은총을 입는 것이라고 이야기함. 1637년 유죄판결을 받고 추방령이 선고됨.

1643년에 지금의 로드 아일랜드에서 죽음.
